Kia electric vehicles are losing popularity, but this sedan model is rapidly gaining momentum

Kia Sales: Electric Vehicles Decline, Sedans Rise

In May, Kia recorded a 5% increase in total sales compared to the previous year. However, this figure hides significant changes in the sales structure. The most striking was the surge in popularity of the K5 sedan—its sales grew by 256% in a month and by 220% since the beginning of the year. Together with the K4 model, these cars have already brought the brand over 90,000 sales in 2025.

In contrast, the electric models EV6 and EV9 continue to lose ground. EV6 sales fell by 69.8%, while only 37 units of the EV9 were sold, a 98.3% drop compared to May 2024. This trend is not unique to Kia—other manufacturers, such as Ford, are also facing declining demand for electric vehicles.

Kia Sales Dynamics in the U.S.

Model May 2025 May 2024 Change
EV9 37 2187 -98.3%
EV6 801 2,660 -69.9%
K5 6,957 1,950 256.8%
Telluride 11,560 10,315 12.1%
Total 79,007 75,156 5.1%

Interestingly, besides the K5, the Carnival (+68%) and Telluride (+12.1%) also showed significant growth. Meanwhile, the Soul, Niro, and Seltos demonstrated declining sales. It seems the U.S. market currently favors traditional internal combustion engine vehicles and hybrids, despite all manufacturers’ efforts to promote electric vehicles. The updated EV6 and EV9 models, recently released, have so far failed to reverse this trend.
