Supra discontinued, but a new GR generation may emerge

The future of Toyota GR86: what we know

Toyota representatives have confirmed that the GR86 model will remain in the brand’s lineup, and discussions are already underway regarding the development of a third generation. The car plays an important role for the company, attracting young buyers and sports car enthusiasts.

“The GR86 serves a very important function as an affordable, fun sports car that delivers an unforgettable driving experience. We want to keep it in the Toyota and GR lineup,” said Cooper Ericksen, senior vice president of product planning at Toyota Motor North America.

Prospects and possible changes

Unlike the Supra, which has a gap between generations, the GR86 is unlikely to cease production. However, it remains unclear whether Toyota will continue collaborating with Subaru on the next version. Sales of the BRZ, which is technically similar to the GR86, have dropped significantly, which could lead to changes in the partnership.

While Toyota has not commented on the possibility of reviving the MR-2 model, company representatives emphasize that the GR brand has proven its ability to create affordable and exciting cars. Recent data shows that the GR86 is selling steadily—over 11,000 units were sold in the U.S. in 2024.

Regardless of whether Toyota decides to develop the next generation independently, the GR86 remains an important part of their sports portfolio. For fans of this rear-wheel-drive coupe, this is good news—the model won’t disappear from the market in the coming years. It may even receive new technologies or a design update to remain competitive.
