Peugeot revives GTi in electric version E-208
The French automaker Peugeot is preparing the return of the iconic GTi badge, this time for the electric version of the compact hatchback E-208. The presentation of the novelty is scheduled for June 13 during the “24 Hours of Le Mans” race. This will be the brand’s first electric car with an emphasis on dynamics and driving pleasure.
According to company representative Alain Favey, the revival of the GTi lineup will allow Peugeot to combine historical heritage with modern technology:
“We confirm the return of GTi on the E-208 in the near future. Our goal is to continue developing the brand’s reputation as a manufacturer of cars with pronounced driver-oriented qualities”
The E-208 GTi is expected to feature technical solutions from related models such as the Abarth 600e and Opel Mokka GSE. The electric motor’s power will likely range from 237 to 278 hp, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 6 seconds.
The future of the GTi lineup
Although the project launch is tied to the electric version, Peugeot does not rule out the possibility of creating new GTi models with internal combustion engines if there is demand. For now, the company is focused on introducing the first electric car with this legendary badge, which hasn’t been used since the previous generations of the 208 and 308.
The return of the GTi series comes at a time when many manufacturers are rethinking their approach to “hot” versions of their models in the world of electric vehicles. Peugeot is trying to strike a balance between eco-friendliness and driving emotions, which could be an important step in retaining brand enthusiasts amid market changes.
