Miniature VW ID. Buzz appears at Hamburg’s museum

Volkswagen has introduced a new interesting model for the miniature collection at Hamburg’s Miniatur Wunderland museum. This is a 1:87 scale replica of the electric microbus ID. Buzz, which doesn’t just sit on a shelf but drives around the city, pulling a small trailer behind it.

Creating such a detailed model took about 200 hours of work. It is equipped with an electric motor powered by a 4-volt system and features functional lighting. When the battery runs low, the miniature bus autonomously drives to a charging station, where it recharges via its mirrors.

This is the smallest moving vehicle in the automated traffic system of the city of Knuffingen, and the only one that pulls a trailer.

The model accurately reproduces the design of the real ID. Buzz, including its yellow-and-white color scheme. Additional elements, such as the roof rack, are not just for appearance but also house mechanical components.

Miniatur Wunderland is one of Germany’s most popular tourist attractions, featuring over 1,200 trains and detailed landscapes. Volkswagen has previously added miniature models to the exhibition, such as the Golf GTI for its 50th anniversary.

This miniature is based on the real ID. Buzz, which has traveled over 125,000 km through 41 countries. The museum even tracks the distance its tiny replica covers, converting it into real-world scale. For visitors, there’s also another mini-ID. Buzz hidden as an Easter egg.

Such a project demonstrates how modern technology combines with tradition. The miniature not only entertains but also reminds us of the evolution of automobiles—from classic vans to electric models. At the same time, it’s another step in popularizing eco-mobility through unconventional formats.
