Record sales of electric vehicles in 2025
In the first four months of 2025, global sales of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) reached 5.6 million units. China remains the leader with 3.3 million vehicles sold, which is 35% more than last year. In North America, sales increased to 600,000, but the growth rate here is more modest—only 5%.
In April, 1.5 million electric vehicles were sold, which is 29% more than in April 2024. However, compared to March, there was a slight decline of 12%, which may indicate a stabilization of demand after the initial hype.
Regional trends
Europe shows significant recovery after a difficult 2024: over four months, sales grew by 25%, reaching 1.2 million vehicles. The highest growth was recorded in Germany (+42%), Italy (+56%), Spain (+57%), and the UK (+32%). France, on the contrary, faced a 14% drop in sales, which is linked to the reduction of government subsidies.
“Negotiations on customs tariffs remain a key topic in the industry, but Chinese and European manufacturers continue to increase their market share,” noted Charles Lester, an analyst at RhoMotion.
Although the US and China recently agreed on a temporary reduction in duties, tariffs on imported electric vehicles remain unchanged. In Mexico, sales almost doubled, while in Canada and the US, growth rates remain moderate.
The global electric vehicle market continues to develop despite economic challenges and regulatory changes. China’s performance is particularly impressive, where demand remains high, and local manufacturers are actively expanding their presence. In Europe, growth is supported by government programs, except in France, where the reduction in benefits has negatively impacted sales. In North America, the market is moving slower, but the Mexican segment shows dynamic growth.
