We Tested the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan — It Will Surprise You, but It’s Exactly What You Need

The New Volkswagen Tiguan: What You Should Know

Volkswagen has unveiled the updated Tiguan — a compact SUV that remains a key model for the brand. Although the company has already hinted at a new generation, last year’s sales of the previous version increased by 23.8%. It is the most popular VW model both globally and in North America.

The new version starts at $29,495, while the top trim costs $39,755 (excluding delivery). The car has become more powerful, more spacious, and has lost its third row of seats. The main changes concern the design, interior, and technology.

Design and Interior

The exterior of the Tiguan now resembles a smaller version of the Atlas Sport thanks to shorter overhangs and a more aggressive grille. Top trims feature illuminated logos and light panels. The interior has become more spacious, and the quality of materials has improved. For example, the base S trim uses less cheap glossy plastic, while top trims offer tri-zone climate control, massaging seats, and noise-insulated windshield.

Technical Features

The 2.0L turbo engine now delivers 201 hp (+17 hp compared to its predecessor) due to updated internal components. The car’s weight has decreased by 77 kg, improving dynamics. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic. Standard equipment includes a 12.9-inch infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Also standard are 10 airbags, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring.

Driving Impressions

The Tiguan doesn’t claim to be sporty but provides comfort and predictability on the road. The steering has a light on-center feel, and the suspension handles bumps well. Fuel consumption for the all-wheel-drive SEL R-Line version is 25.7 mpg, slightly better than advertised.

Among its competitors are the Honda CR-V with its hybrid version and the Mazda CX-5/CX-50, which offer more sporty handling. Meanwhile, the Tiguan wins with a more premium interior and technology for the same price.

Volkswagen has already announced a more powerful Tiguan Turbo version to fill the gap in dynamics. For now, the Tiguan remains a reliable choice for those seeking a comfortable family SUV with European character. Its main advantages are thoughtful design, high-quality interior, and competitive pricing, making it one of the leaders in its segment.
