New Subaru WRX tS: More Mature, But Less Fiery
Once, cars with the STI emblem were associated with unbridled energy and racing spirit. However, the new WRX tS, which stands for “Tuned by STI,” demonstrates a different approach. It is the most refined version of the WRX to date, but it is no longer as aggressive as its predecessors. Instead, it has become more sophisticated and comfortable, making it an ideal option for daily use.
Despite the improvements, Subaru has still not been able to fill the void left by the true STI. If the brand does not return to its roots, the WRX risks losing the uniqueness that once made it so popular.
Technical Specifications
Design and Interior
Externally, the WRX tS looks restrained, even despite the World Rally Blue color and gold brake calipers. However, sporty elements are noticeable in the details, such as the functional hood scoop and rear diffuser. The interior has become much more comfortable compared to previous generations. The Recaro seats combine support and comfort, and the faux-suede upholstery with blue stitching adds style.
The only serious drawback remains the multimedia system—it is slow and unreliable, which can irritate the driver when using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
Driving Experience
The WRX tS does not impress with its dynamics: acceleration to 100 km/h takes 6 seconds, and the engine sound is not inspiring. However, the handling and braking are excellent. Adaptive dampers allow you to choose between comfort and stiffness, making the car suitable for both daily commutes and spirited driving.
Despite all the advantages, WRX sales are falling. Perhaps because it has lost its aggressiveness, and the prices for top versions have become too high. For $48,000, buyers expect more than just a “more expensive” version of the regular WRX. Meanwhile, competitors like the Toyota GR Corolla offer more power and emotion for the same money.
The WRX tS is a good car, but it is no longer the fiery sports car it once was. It has become more mature, but along with that, it has lost part of its soul. For those seeking a balance between comfort and dynamics, it will suit, but fans of the classic STI will most likely remain disappointed.
