Seiko Celebrates Japanese Market Classic with New Speedtimer Retro Chronographs

Seiko Releases a Limited Series of Watches to Commemorate the Datsun 240Z’s Rally Victory

Japanese watchmaker Seiko has introduced a special Prospex Speedtimer series dedicated to the Datsun 240Z’s victory in the 1971 East African Safari Rally. This collaboration combines historical motifs with modern watchmaking technology.

In 1971, the crew of driver Edgar Herrmann and co-driver Hans Schuller won in a Datsun 240Z, which was the first victory for the Japanese brand in this legendary rally. This is why Seiko decided to honor this event, as Schuller was wearing a Speedtimer watch at the time.

Collection Details

The limited edition lineup includes three variants:

  • SPB517 – 39.5 mm mechanical chronograph with Caliber 6R55 (2,500 pieces).
  • SSC957 – 41.4 mm solar chronograph with Caliber V192 (4,000 pieces).
  • SRQ057 – 42 mm automatic chronograph with Caliber 8R48 (only 500 pieces).

The watch design is rich with automotive motifs: red accents, Datsun logos on the dial, and special engravings on the case back. The straps are made from leather certified by the Leather Working Group.

Pricing and Availability

The limited models will go on sale in September 2025 through Seiko boutiques and partner stores. Prices start from $1,000 for the solar model and reach up to $3,200 for the top automatic chronograph.

This collection is not just a tribute to a historical event, but also a demonstration of how automotive culture can inspire the creation of unique accessories. Seiko has successfully combined retro style with modern technology, making these watches valuable both for collectors and enthusiasts of automotive history.
