This Extremely Rare Hot Hatch Makes the GR Yaris Look Like a Child’s Toy

Rare Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 Auctioned

While the Renault 5 Turbo is considered a legendary car of the 1980s, Peugeot also created its own mid-engine version to compete in Group B. Only 200 road-going versions were built, and today they are among the most valuable collector cars of that era. One such example with minimal mileage could be sold for $350,000 at auction.

Peugeot’s successes in rally racing are confirmed by two WRC championship titles in 1985 and 1986. The road versions retained the sporting spirit but without some of the racing technologies. All cars were painted the same gray color and had a left-hand drive configuration.

Technical Features

Under the hood (or more precisely, behind the driver’s back) lies a turbocharged 1.8-liter engine that delivers 197 hp and 255 Nm of torque. While by modern standards this is not impressive, all-wheel drive and a weight of less than 1000 kg make it a true racer.

The auction house Bonhams is responsible for the sale of this example. The current owner has carried out a comprehensive restoration, replacing the suspension, radiator, clutch, and other key components. Despite this, the mileage remains incredibly low – only 3,216 km.

The price could reach that of a new Ferrari 296 GTB, underscoring the collector’s value of this model. For fans of rally history, this is a true find.

The collector car market in recent years has shown steady demand for rare models, especially those associated with historical achievements in motorsport. The Peugeot 205 T16 is one such example where technical heritage combines with a limited production run, making it the dream of many collectors.
