Hyundai and Kia Agree to Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit Over Airbag Issues
Airbag problems in Hyundai and Kia vehicles led to a multi-year legal process. The manufacturers agreed to a huge compensation amount, although they deny any wrongdoing. A significant portion of the funds will go to pay for legal services, not directly to the affected car owners.
The legal battle lasted over six years and concerned defective airbag control units from supplier ZF. This malfunction could have led to the airbags not deploying during an accident, creating a direct threat to drivers and passengers.
Which Models Are Eligible for Compensation?
The list includes the following models: Hyundai Sonata (2011-2013), Sonata Hybrid (2011-2012), Kia Forte (2010-2013), Optima (2011-2013), Optima Hybrid (2011-2012), and Sedona (2011-2012). However, the compensation program covers an even wider range of vehicles, including some models up to the 2023 model year.
Owners who independently repaired the problematic components can expect compensation of up to $350. To receive payments, it was necessary to own the vehicle as of April 14, 2025.
The companies’ total costs will exceed $62 million, of which $20 million will go to the plaintiffs’ lawyers. This situation once again highlights the importance of the quality of safety components in vehicles and the consequences of their potential defects. The problem affected tens of thousands of owners, and even after the lawsuit is settled, the question of trust in these brands may remain open.
