The Last New Car Cheaper Than $20,000 – The Chance to Buy is Disappearing Quickly

The Era of Affordable New Cars in the U.S. is Coming to an End

In June, the average price of a new Mitsubishi Mirage was $18,484, making it the cheapest new car on the market. However, this model will soon disappear from sale, as the manufacturer discontinued its production last year. Dealers currently have fewer than 1,700 units left, after which the Mirage will permanently leave the market.

The Mirage remains the last new car with an average price of less than $20,000

Until recently, the Nissan Versa could also be purchased for less than $20,000, but after the cancellation of the base version with a manual transmission, its minimum price has increased to $20,130. This means that as early as this summer, there will be no new car left in the U.S. with a price below $20,000.

Price Dynamics in the Automotive Market

Overall, the average price of a new car in June reached $48,907, which is 0.4% higher than in May. Among manufacturers, Geely Auto Group (+1.7%) and General Motors (+1.6%) showed the largest price increases. In contrast, Tata Motors (including Land Rover) showed a decline of 7.7%.

Among individual brands, Chrysler (+3.4%) and Mitsubishi (+3.5%) showed the largest price increases, while Land Rover (-7.9%) and Lincoln (-2.9%) recorded the largest declines.

Interestingly, despite its impending disappearance from the market, the Mitsubishi Mirage continues to be in demand – sales in the first half of 2025 increased by 125% compared to the same period in 2024. This indicates that many buyers are trying to seize the opportunity to purchase the last available affordable new cars before they completely disappear from the market.
