New hybrid crossover from Mazda, kept secret, unexpectedly appeared online

Updated Mazda CX-5: what is known about the new model

A photo of the updated Mazda CX-5 has appeared online, showing a completely redesigned exterior of the model. In addition to the updated design, the crossover will receive a hybrid powertrain developed by the company independently. The official presentation is expected to take place soon, and the model will be released as a 2026 model year.

According to reports, the photo was published on the Car Design News page on Instagram. The shot looks credible, as the model is very similar to prototypes seen earlier during testing. The overall proportions and window shape remained similar to the previous version, but the body panels are completely changed.

Design changes

The most noticeable are the updated headlights, which now smoothly blend into the radiator grille. The grille itself retained its characteristic shape but received a new pattern and thinner chrome elements. The bumper has become more massive, giving the front end a more expressive look.

The wheel arches received plastic cladding, which adds a slightly more ‘off-road’ look to the crossover. The rear is not visible in the photo, but judging from previous shots, the model will get thinner LED taillights and visible exhaust pipes.

Technical updates

The manufacturer has confirmed that the new CX-5 will receive a hybrid version with a new SkyActiv-Z gasoline engine. However, this powertrain will appear in the lineup only by the end of 2027, so it will not be available at the start of sales.

The interior is also expected to undergo changes – it will become more high-quality and technological, with elements from more premium Mazda models. Furthermore, the new generation may become slightly more spacious due to increased dimensions.

The competitors of the updated Mazda CX-5 remain the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester, which also offer hybrid versions. The presentation of the new model is expected in the coming weeks, and its market launch – as a 2026 model year.

Given the popularity of the previous version, the update looks quite promising. Particular interest is caused by the hybrid version, which could significantly increase the model’s competitiveness in the European market. Moreover, Mazda traditionally emphasizes quality of finish and handling, which could be its advantage against competitors.
