Ford Could Fill a Focus-Sized Gap in Its Model Lineup

Ford Plans a New Crossover

Ford, according to reports, will launch a new Focus-sized crossover in 2027. The model may be offered with hybrid and electric powertrains. It is expected to be sold alongside the Kuga and use shared components.

Changes in Market Preferences

Sedans and hatchbacks have lost popularity among consumers who have preferred SUVs. Automakers have responded by reducing passenger car lineups and adding a range of new crossovers.

Ford’s Strategy in Europe

Ford is reportedly adding another crossover to its lineup in 2027, and it could fill the void left by the discontinuation of the Focus. The model will be produced in Spain and play a key role in reviving Ford’s position in Europe.

Details About the New Model

According to Autocar, the model will be a mid-size crossover but will not replace the Kuga. This is interesting, given that the American equivalent of the Kuga, the Escape, is ceasing production.

Instead, the crossover is reportedly to be produced alongside the Kuga and will be offered with hybrid and electric powertrains. There are also rumors that the two models will share key components to reduce costs.

Technical Features and Positioning

While specific details are still scarce, the model may be based on the outdated C2 platform that underpins everything from the Bronco Sport and Maverick to the discontinued Focus. The model is also expected to be relatively affordable and positioned as a competitor to the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Pricing Policy

While it’s too early to talk numbers, there is a large gap between the £26,245 ($33,600) for the Puma Gen-E in the UK and the £39,285 ($50,300) for the Explorer EV. This means that if a future electric variant were to cost £32,765 ($42,000), it would be perfectly positioned between these two models.

Additional Expectations

Little is known about this crossover so far, but the company is reportedly going to emphasize design and driving dynamics. Unfortunately, the chances of it appearing in the US seem slim to none.

This move by Ford could be an important step in their European strategy, especially given the current trends of transitioning to electric vehicles and increasing competition from Asian manufacturers. The ability to offer an affordable electric crossover could significantly strengthen their market position.
