This Company Will Give Your 2000s Range Rover Both Retro and Modern Features

Reviving a Classic

The third-generation Range Rover from the 2000s still receives praise for its clean lines and understated luxury. Almost 25 years later, Estonian company Velvet Motorworks plans a limited run of a revived version, custom-built to order for buyers who want something more special.

The L322 Range Rover model first debuted in 2001, with subsequent updates in 2006 and 2010. It was designed under the supervision of BMW, although Ford had already taken control of Land Rover by the time sales began.

Mihkel Kulaots, founder of Velvet Motorworks, explained why this particular model was chosen for the company’s first project: “I was a teenager when the L322 first appeared, and I vividly remember seeing it for the first time in real life. I was struck by how powerful and luxurious this angular car seemed. Now that the earliest examples are over 20 years old, these vehicles deserve a complete teardown, rebuild, and character infusion – this is not just a restoration, but a revival of a modern classic.”

A New Take on Old Features

This is not a typical restomod where a classic is simply updated with modern technology and mechanics. Externally, Velvet Motorworks has chosen a more retro approach, giving the L322 Range Rover features of the original model and then updating them as if it were a restomod in its own right. External changes include special LED lighting with round elements, a redesigned grille with vertical slats, and bumpers inspired by classic off-roaders. The combination of larger wheels and a raised ride height completes the exterior look.

Interior and Technical Updates

The company has not shared photos of the “handcrafted” interior but promises a blend of premium materials with modern technology, such as Apple CarPlay connectivity and an ADAS system. Particular attention is paid to the chassis: a full restoration is performed first, followed by chassis and performance upgrades. The result aims to retain the analog feel of driving while improving comfort and handling.

All builds will be based on the Range Rover with the turbocharged 4.2-liter V8 petrol engine. This power unit from Jaguar produced 400 hp from the factory, but its power will be increased through hardware and software updates. Finally, it will be paired with an optional active exhaust system for more drama.

From Visualization to Limited Production

As you can see, the Velvet Motorworks Range Rover exists only in 3D visualizations. They were created by CGI artist Nils Pirmä, who previously worked with Koenigsegg and Genesis. The company plans to have the first prototype ready by mid-2026, with customer deliveries starting by the end of the following year.

The limited production of the L322 Range Rover restomod will take place in Estonia, and each unit will be unique. The price remains a secret, but Velvet Motorworks is already accepting expressions of interest.

The Velvet Motorworks initiative demonstrates the growing demand for premium restomods that combine nostalgia with modern technology. The choice of the L322 generation is interesting, as this model marks a transitional period for Land Rover between different owners. The success of this project could encourage the further revival of other “modern classics” from the 2000s, which are gaining popularity among collectors.
