New Mercedes GLA: Hybrid and Electric on One Platform

Mercedes-Benz continues developing the new generation of the compact GLA crossover, which will receive both hybrid and electric versions. Recent detailed spy photos of the hybrid variant have emerged, allowing us to examine key design features and technical solutions.

Key Facts About the New GLA

Platform and Model Range

The CLA sedan, introduced by Mercedes in March, is only the first in a series of new compact cars that will go on sale over the next five years. Two crossovers will also be built on the same high-tech MMA platform – the successor to the GLB and the GLA model shown in the photos.

Hybrid vs Electric: Differences

Although the hybrid and electric versions of the GLA share the same basic body structure, the electric model received a closed-off radiator grille, while the hybrid crossover requires air intakes for engine cooling. Although the grille itself is not visible in the photos, it will likely resemble the style recently introduced on the electric GLC 2026 at the Munich auto show.

Lighting and Design

The front headlights of this prototype appear to follow the GLC’s design: a straight LED strip is positioned above the star-shaped LED element. However, the rear lights look different. They also feature star-shaped LEDs but are surrounded by an LED ring that extends from the rear pillar to the tailgate, possibly even connecting to the opposite side of the vehicle. This detail, which may function as a brake light, was not noticeable in the August photos of the electric GLA, but it’s likely that both variants will feature it in the production version.

Camouflage and Real Contours

Mercedes engineers are using rigid panels under the camouflage wrap on the doors to hide the true body contours. They’ve even created imitations of the rear light contours and the protrusion under the rear window. However, when zooming in on the photos, it’s visible that the actual panel doesn’t have this protrusion, which is logical since a similar element is not present on the GLC either.

Technical Specifications

The electric GLA is expected in 2026 and, judging by the CLA specifications, will feature an 800-volt electrical architecture and up to 349 hp in the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive 350 4Matic version. The hybrid versions, debuting in 2027, will instead be equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, a 1.3 kWh battery, a 48-volt system, and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission. Front-wheel-drive models may develop up to 161 hp, while 4Matic all-wheel-drive versions may reach up to 188 hp.

The development of the new GLA generation demonstrates Mercedes’ strategy of parallel development of different powertrain types on a single platform. This allows the brand to flexibly respond to demand in different regions where electric vehicle infrastructure is not yet sufficiently developed. Using the MMA platform for all compact models also helps reduce costs and simplify production processes, which could positively impact the final price for consumers.
