Ford Mustang GTD Testing at the Nürburgring
Ford continues testing its most powerful Mustang GTD on the legendary Nürburgring track, demonstrating an even more aggressive approach to aerodynamics and performance.
Key Features of the Updated Mustang GTD
Competitive Battle for Records
In May, Ford reported that the Mustang GTD completed the Nürburgring in 6 minutes 52.072 seconds, which is five seconds faster than the previous result. This was achieved thanks to an updated suspension, aerodynamic improvements, and chassis tuning.
However, Chevrolet was quick to respond, introducing the Corvette ZR1, which posted a time of 6:50.763, and the ZR1X with a result of 6:49.275. This became a serious challenge for Ford, especially considering the price difference: the ZR1 starts at $183,400, while the Mustang GTD starts at $327,960.
Farley said “the game has begun,” and now Blue Oval is trying to win a competition that is not a priority for most customers, especially when technical issues, such as faulty rearview cameras, remain unresolved until 2026.
Aerodynamics and Design Updates
The new Mustang GTD prototype is equipped with a more extreme aerodynamic package. The rear aero discs and canards are designed to provide additional downforce, and the hood has received updated ventilation openings. Photographers also noticed changes in the sound of the exhaust system, which may be related to track noise level requirements.
An important detail is the gold Nürburgring sticker on the body, which likely indicates a special performance package if the tests prove successful.
These efforts by Ford demonstrate the brand’s persistence in achieving leadership on the racing scene, despite criticism regarding priorities. The engineers seem focused on turning the Mustang GTD into a car capable of competing with the world’s best sports cars, even if it requires significant investment and time. The success of these tests could determine the future of the company’s high-performance models and their place on the international stage.
