The state of Wisconsin is considering a new bill that could force routine traffic violators to install special speed limiting devices on their vehicles. These GPS limiters automatically prevent exceeding the permitted speed, and their cost is approximately $1,700.
System Operation Principle
The intelligent driver assistance system functions similarly to ignition interlock devices for those who drove under the influence. It uses GPS data to determine the local speed limit and automatically restricts the vehicle’s speed according to established norms.
Target Audience of the Law
The bill, proposed by Milwaukee Democrats, applies to individuals who have been convicted of reckless driving twice within five years. This includes those who exceeded the speed limit by 20 mph or more. The cost of the device is borne by the violating driver themselves, but financial assistance is provided for low-income individuals.

According to Senator Chris Larson, this approach could help change the culture of dangerous driving in the city. Violators who attempt to turn off, remove, or fail to install the device risk up to six months of imprisonment or a $600 fine.

However, not everyone supports this initiative. Republican Bob Donovan called the proposal creative but doubts its practical effectiveness. He noted that some drivers might find ways to bypass the technology, while others would continue to operate vehicles without such devices.
Additional Safety Measures
Reckless driving is not limited to speeding alone, so dangerous drivers may remain a threat on the roads. At the same time, Wisconsin is not the only state implementing similar measures. Washington and Virginia are also working on installing analogous technologies for violators.
To comprehensively address the problem, Wisconsin recently passed an additional law allowing police to confiscate a driver’s vehicle for the first offense of reckless driving.
The implementation of speed limiting technology is controversial due to potential technical shortcomings and questions about its impact on driver behavior. However, legislators hope that such measures will help reduce the number of accidents related to speeding, especially in urban environments where reckless driving poses a serious threat to traffic safety.
