Halts Acura vehicle production due to reports of accelerator pedal malfunctions

Key Investigation Facts

Start of the Official Investigation

The Acura ILX model is now under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation following a series of reports from owners describing alarming loss of braking performance.

Overall, more than 22,000 vehicles are subject to inspection, although there have been no reports so far of accidents, injuries, or fatalities linked to the alleged brake problems.

Reasons for Brake Concerns

According to the Office of Defects Investigation, four vehicle owner questionnaires and several early warning reports regarding the 2019 Acura ILX have been received.

Each report details a loss of braking ability. In these instances, drivers describe the brake pedal going completely to the floor when pressed, which is a clear sign of reduced hydraulic performance.

Safety Implications and Scope of the Problem

This clearly poses a significant safety issue. Equally concerning is the fact that vehicle owners may not notice any problems until the braking system fails to provide sufficient stopping power. In total, 22,146 Acura ILX models are under investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that while all field reports concern 2019 ILX models, the 2020 versions are also included within the scope of the investigation because they have the same braking system.

Malfunction or complete failure of the braking system is likely to lead to increased stopping distances, potentially raising the risk of an accident with possible injuries and/or property damage.

Historical Context of Safety Issues

This is not the first time the ILX has drawn the attention of US safety authorities. In late 2023, the ILX was included in a large-scale recall affecting 2.5 million Honda and Acura models due to faulty Denso fuel pumps. This recall affected Acura ILX models from 2018–2020.

This is the second major safety issue identified in this model in the last two years, which may indicate systemic quality control problems on the production lines. The manufacturer will have to not only address the technical defects but also restore consumer trust in the brand, especially given the competitive premium compact sedan market.
