New V8 Engine Family from General Motors
Automaker General Motors has announced investments of $900 million to create a new family of V8 engines. According to reports, two engines of different displacements are being developed: one intended for trucks, and the other for sports models like the Corvette.
Competition and GM’s Strategy
It previously seemed that the era of American V8s was coming to an end, as manufacturers such as Ford, Toyota, and Stellantis began implementing powerful six-cylinder engines instead of traditional V8s. However, General Motors continues to develop technologies that have proven reliable and plans to introduce the new V8 family in 2027. These engines will remain relevant at least until the next decade.
GM V8s Are Still Blowing Up And Feds Want Answers
Although information about the investments and development plans was already known, the details remained undisclosed. The latest report added specifics regarding the future engines.
Technical Specifications of the New Engines
The new V8 engines will be presented in two main variants: a base 5.7-liter engine intended for trucks such as the Silverado 1500, and a 6.6-liter engine for sports cars, particularly the Corvette. The 5.7-liter version is expected to be 6% more efficient than previous analogues.
For comparison, the current Silverado engines offer a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 hp and a 6.2-liter with 420 hp.

Potential for High-Performance Models
The 6.6-liter engine is of particular interest, as it could find application not only in the Corvette but also in trucks. Unlike competitors such as Ford and Ram, GM currently does not have specialized high-performance pickups, so the appearance of such an engine could fill this niche.
How about a Raptor R rival?
Technological Expectations
Although the technical details of the new engines have not yet been disclosed, they are expected to be made of aluminum and compatible with hybrid technologies. There are also suggestions that GM may abandon the use of pushrods in these engines, which would be a significant improvement step.

Company Reaction and Consumer Hopes
GM representatives remain reserved regarding rumors about engine displacements, stating that they do not comment on speculation on this topic. However, consumers hope that the new engines will be more reliable than previous models, which caused a massive recall due to manufacturing defects.
These GM plans demonstrate that, despite the general trend towards downsizing engines and electrification, the need for powerful and efficient V8s remains relevant. The development of new engines could become an important step in preserving the competitive advantages of the American auto industry, especially in segments where power and reliability are crucial.
