The appearance of an uncamouflaged prototype almost officially confirms that Nissan is preparing a new generation of the Versa subcompact sedan. The photos suggest the car is in for not just a minor update, but a serious redesign.
Public Premiere Coming Soon
The new Versa was spotted in Mexico during filming, likely for future advertising campaigns. This suggests the model’s public premiere will happen very soon, possibly within the coming weeks.
Modern Design on a Familiar Foundation
As with the larger Sentra, the new Versa appears to be a deep modernization rather than a completely new development from scratch. The car retains the basic body structure of the previous generation, which debuted in 2019. The silhouette, roofline, and window openings have remained virtually unchanged, indicating the platform’s lifecycle is being extended.

However, Nissan’s engineers and designers have radically reworked the front end. The styling now borrows cues from the Murano crossover: split LED headlights are connected by a glossy black trim piece. The grille has become significantly narrower, and the lower bumper intake is elongated. Meanwhile, the hood and front fenders appear to be unchanged.
Updated Rear and Interior
The changes at the rear are less radical but noticeable. The new pair of rear lights provides a sharper visual accent, and the trunk lid has been slightly modified to accommodate large model name lettering. The license plate is now positioned lower, integrated into the updated rear bumper. The car in the photo also features new alloy wheels and is painted in a light metallic “Arctic Ice Blue” shade.

There are no interior photos yet, but the 2027 Versa is expected to receive an updated dashboard. Possible innovations include a digital instrument cluster and a modernized multimedia system. The model may also be enhanced with more advanced driver assistance systems to meet growing expectations in this segment.
Technical Side Remains Proven
Technically, the car continues to use the Nissan V platform, the same one underpinning the previous generation Kicks and the new Kait crossover. Under the hood, the naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is most likely to remain. However, it may now be paired exclusively with a CVT transmission, as the manual gearbox was already discontinued for the current generation.
Supply Questions for the North American Market

Production of the new model will be established at the Nissan plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico. This is a change from the previous model, which was produced at the old CIVAC plant in Cuernavaca. The latter is scheduled to be closed by March 2026.

According to local media reports, the next-generation Versa may be sold exclusively in Latin American markets, such as Mexico and Brazil, where sedans continue to enjoy stable demand. This opinion is supported by a recent teaser from Nissan, which shows the new Versa next to the Navara pickup—another model focused on these markets.

Nevertheless, with growing demand for affordable cars in the USA, Nissan may later consider the possibility of returning the updated Versa to the American market. The decision will largely depend on import duties and trade policies, which could complicate competitive pricing for models produced in Mexico.
The prototype photos demonstrate Nissan’s cautious but confident approach to updating one of its key global models. The shift of production to a new plant indicates strategic changes within the company, while the focus on Latin American markets may be a smart move in current economic realities. The success of this model, as always, will be determined by the balance of price, quality, and technological relevance, especially in regions where buyers are very sensitive to the cost of ownership.
