Unreliable SUV
The Toyota RAV4 is the absolute sales leader among passenger cars in the United States; every year, thousands of drivers choose this model, counting on its legendary reliability. However, for one Arizona resident, this reputation turned out to be greatly exaggerated.
Road Catastrophe
Jake Weir purchased a certified pre-owned 2019 RAV4 with 60 thousand miles on it, expecting trouble-free driving thanks to Toyota’s warranty. However, last fall, his peaceful drive was interrupted by a loud explosion.
I accelerated a little. Heard a loud boom. Looked in the rearview mirror. Smoke everywhere.
After that, the car’s engine suffered catastrophic destruction.
Dealer’s Water Trap
The Toyota dealership center where Weir took the SUV conducted an expensive engine teardown and made an unexpected discovery. According to them, over four liters of water were found inside. On this basis — hydro-lock and subsequent destruction — he was denied warranty repair. This decision surprised the owner, as the day of the breakdown was hot and dry.
For this to happen, I would have had to hit water almost instantly. The day I drove out, it was 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside, mid-September, not a cloud in the sky. They claim they found over a gallon of water in the car, and I can’t imagine how that’s even possible.
Insurers Disagree
The situation became more complicated when Weir’s insurance company gave its assessment. Its examination found no traces of water in the engine, classifying the incident as an “actual engine failure.” In the insurers’ opinion, this is exactly the kind of case that should be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, so they also refused to pay.

Fight for Justice
Caught between a rock and a hard place, with neither the dealer nor the insurer willing to take responsibility, Jake Weir is ready to go all the way. He plans to file a lawsuit, as well as an official consumer complaint with the Arizona Attorney General’s office. Toyota representatives stated they have already communicated with the customer and have no additional comments on this matter.
This case vividly illustrates how complex the warranty service procedure can be when large sums are at stake. The discrepancies in conclusions between the dealer and the insurance company’s independent experts put the car owner in a difficult position, forcing them to seek justice through the courts. Such stories often become a test not only for the reliability of the equipment but also for the transparency of company policies and the effectiveness of consumer protection systems. For many drivers, the warranty is the main argument when purchasing, and such situations can seriously affect trust in the brand in the long term.
