Tesla has removed the section listing available Model 3 inventory cars from its Canadian website. Now, buyers can only order a new car, not select a ready-made one from stock. This change occurred at the same time as Canada began issuing the first permits for importing electric vehicles from China at a reduced customs duty rate.
Possible Reasons and Context
According to reports, the Model 3 cars previously available in Canada and manufactured in the USA are now being sent back to the United States. There is no official comment from Tesla, but the timing of these actions is hardly coincidental.
Since March 1, Canada has begun issuing the first batch of 24,500 permits for Chinese electric vehicles at a reduced customs duty rate of 6.1%, instead of the usual 100%.
Permits are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. This suggests that Tesla is already preparing to export Canadian versions of the Model 3 from China, trying to secure as many of the available permits as possible.
Competition and Market Implications
Most Model 3s for the Canadian market were previously manufactured in the USA, although Tesla had already exported this model from China before the duty increase. Now, with the reduced rate, the company has a good chance of being among the first to benefit.
Brands such as Volvo and Polestar (owned by Geely) could also be among the first to bring Chinese electric vehicles back to the Canadian market at a lower price. However, Tesla seems to have already taken the first step.
According to the report, theoretically, Tesla could obtain all 24,500 permits available until August 31, as Canada has not set a limit on the number of permits for one brand at this stage.
If this happens, competing brands may be forced to wait until September, when the second permit allocation window opens, which will also include unused permits from the first phase.
These changes could significantly impact the availability and prices of electric vehicles in Canada in the coming months. Tesla’s swift actions indicate its strategic vision and readiness to adapt to new trade conditions, which could temporarily shift the market balance of power in its favor. For Canadian consumers, this could mean more affordable Chinese-made Model 3s as early as this year, while other manufacturers may lag behind with their offerings.
