Cupra Born gets an update: new front-end design and physical buttons

Cupra Born Update: New Look, Technologies, and Physical Buttons

The Cupra Born electric hatchback, always considered the more stylish and unusual representative of the Volkswagen family, has received an update. The Spanish brand has introduced a facelifted version that includes a new design, improved technical features, and increased range. Furthermore, one of the shortcomings of the original model, which was related to the VW ID.3, has been addressed.

External changes begin at the front, where the Born has received a more aggressive, “shark-like” shape and new triangular matrix LED headlights. This style echoes the brand’s newer models, such as the Tavascan and Formentor.

The rear lights now feature an illuminated Cupra logo integrated into a full-width light bar. New 19- and 20-inch wheels have also appeared, shod with wider 235 mm tires. According to brand representatives, this improves road grip and handling, which was already at a high level, although it may affect the stiffness of the suspension.

The Return of Physical Buttons

However, the most anticipated changes occurred inside. The irritating touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel of the previous model have been replaced with conventional physical buttons. Unfortunately, engineers did not extend this approach to the touch sliders for temperature control on the main screen, a consequence of using shared technologies within the group.

The 12.9-inch touchscreen, introduced in the 2024 update, remains but has received a new Android-based operating system. The instrument panel is now significantly larger – 10.25 inches instead of the previous 5.3 inches, making it much more convenient.

The quality of materials, which was always higher in the Born compared to the VW ID.3, has been further improved. Updated door panels, softer surfaces, and textiles made from recycled marine plastics have appeared. Rear passengers also received air vents, which were missing in the previous version.

New Powertrain Configurations

The car is still built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric platform, but the powertrain lineup has been adjusted. A one-pedal driving mode has also been added.

The base Born Plus version is equipped with a 58 kWh battery and a 187 hp motor, which is less than the previous 201 hp. However, the range has increased from 425 km to 450 km.

The Endurance version with a 79 kWh battery offers a range of about 600 km (compared to 590 km before), faster charging at 185 kW, and 228 hp. The most powerful VZ version, positioned as a “hot” hatchback, delivers 322 hp. At the same time, it retains the 600 km range from the Endurance version, making it a very attractive option in the lineup.

The updated Cupra Born will arrive at European dealerships in the summer. It deserves attention, as this year Cupra also plans to introduce its new, even smaller model – the Raval.

The Cupra Born update clearly demonstrates the trend towards improving the user experience in electric vehicles, even by returning to simple solutions like physical buttons. The increased range with reduced power in base versions indicates optimization for real-world conditions, while the top VZ version combines high dynamic performance with practical autonomy. This makes the model more balanced and competitive in an increasingly demanding market.
