New spy photos show prototypes of the electric Volkswagen ID. Polo with minimal camouflage. The black hatchbacks are equipped with different alloy wheels but otherwise look identical. Volkswagen has officially confirmed the development of a GTI version, as well as the possibility of a less powerful R-Line variant.
Approaching Debut and Design
The Volkswagen ID. Polo is nearing its premiere, gradually shedding its camouflage and revealing the sculptural lines of its body. Two examples of the future “people’s electric car” were spotted during a charging stop in a snowy Northern European landscape. One has familiar 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, like earlier prototypes, but the second is equipped with more interesting wheels.
These are wheels with a black finish and copper accents, reminiscent of those used on Cupra models, particularly the related Cupra Raval. However, they feature VW logos, leaving room for interpretation.
Dimensions and Version Differences
The rest of the body, with a length of 4,053 mm (159.5 inches), appears identical for both prototypes. It should be noted that the GTI version will differ with an updated body kit, including wider bumpers, different wheels, and a roof spoiler.
A plastic strip hides part of the grille and the LED headlights. At the rear, the manufacturer used vinyl to camouflage the full-LED tail lights, making them look similar to the tail lights of the current combustion-engine Polo.
Overall, the ID. Polo looks quite sporty thanks to pronounced wheel arches, sharp character lines, robust proportions, and deep bumpers. Like the ID.2all concept, the production version was signed off by Andreas Mindt, who was recently promoted to head of design for the entire Volkswagen Group.
Interior and Technical Features
Photographers didn’t need to hunt for interior shots, as Volkswagen has already presented it. A camouflaged ID. Polo prototype was showcased at the Car Design Festival 2026 last weekend with its doors open.
The minimalist dashboard features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with retro graphics and a 12.9-inch infotainment display. More interesting is the dedicated row of physical switches below and the volume knob on the center console, which complement the array of buttons on the two-spoke steering wheel. The cabin is upholstered with modern recycled fabrics covering large areas of the dashboard and door cards.
Platform and Powertrains
The ID. Polo shares the MEB+ platform with the Cupra Raval, VW ID. Cross, and Skoda Epiq. The car is expected to be available with various electric powertrains producing 114 hp, 133 hp, and 208 hp.
As for the hot hatchback with the GTI badge, it will develop 223 horsepower and occupy the top position in the lineup. At launch, the hatchback will get a 52 kWh battery pack, but a smaller 37 kWh unit for base variants will appear later.

The arrival of the ID. Polo is a key step for Volkswagen in the affordable electric vehicle segment. The use of the shared MEB+ platform helps optimize costs, which could theoretically make the model more attractive in terms of price. The emphasis on physical buttons in the interior, unlike the fully touch-sensitive interfaces in many modern EVs, indicates an appeal to traditional user preferences. The success of this model could significantly influence the electrification of the compact class in Europe, where the Polo has always been one of the sales leaders.
