Toyota Officially Announces the Return of the Celica Sports Name and All-Wheel Drive Simultaneously

Legend Returns: Toyota Prepares the New Celica Sports

The Japanese automaker Toyota plans to revive the iconic Celica model under the name Celica Sports. The car will receive a powerful hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive, promising to make it a true driver’s car.

Among the key expected features of the new model:

Modern Technology Instead of Nostalgia

Despite a large dose of nostalgia associated with the Celica name, the new model will be built on modern technological solutions. The engine change from 1.6 to 2.0 liters is dictated not only by the need for more power but also by strict environmental emission standards.

“The 1.6-liter displacement cannot meet the requirements of emission standards, so we must consider the possibility of a 2.0-liter engine,” stated Gazoo Racing marketing department manager Mikio Hayashi.

He also noted that the final decision regarding the type of powertrain — whether it will be a hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), or a classic internal combustion engine — has not yet been made.

Power of the Future Engine

Back in 2024, Toyota announced a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder G20E engine. Officially, its power is estimated at 395 horsepower, but according to data, it is capable of producing up to 592 hp (600 hp) after installing a larger turbocharger.

This unit may appear not only in the new Celica but also in other hot models of the brand, such as the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, significantly enhancing their dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, it is being considered for a new mid-engine sports car confirmed by Toyota.

Where Will the Engine Be Located: Front or Mid?

Traditionally, the Celica is characterized by a front-engine layout, while the MR2 model is mid-engine. However, the situation may change. In the rally world, Toyota is already testing a mid-engine car for the WRC championship with a tube frame and a body reminiscent of the Celica.

Toyota representatives avoided giving a direct answer when asked if this is the new Celica. The Japanese publication Best Car even suggests that the production Celica might switch to a mid-engine layout to more clearly distinguish itself from the Supra and GR86. However, this would only be logical if the new Celica simultaneously became the new MR2, as also reported by Japanese media, since developing two relatively affordable mid-engine two-seater cars in parallel would be a strange decision.

The return of the Celica name certainly generates great excitement among car enthusiasts. However, the key question remains which concept Toyota will choose: whether it will be a modern interpretation of a classic front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive coupe, or a radical mid-engine sports car that also inherits the MR2 legacy. Testing of a rally prototype with a Celica-inspired body adds even more confusion and interesting speculation. Final technical details and the car’s market positioning will become clear later, but it can already be said that Toyota is seriously intent on enriching its Gazoo Racing sports lineup with another bright model.
