The new $30,000 Kia EV3 electric car is gradually approaching the American market, although an official announcement has not yet been made

Kia EV3 Prototype Spotted in Mexico

Kia continues to actively develop its electric lineup, and new evidence of this is the prototype of the EV3 model, which was spotted during testing in Mexico. This is interesting, considering the car has already been officially presented in other markets, particularly in Europe. However, the vehicle was still fully camouflaged.

Despite the camouflage wrap, the car’s characteristic EV3 features are easily recognizable: short overhangs, an upright stance, and a square rear end. The high roofline indicates that interior space is a priority over sporty design.

The reader who took these photos, Sylvia Garcia, informed us that the same car has been driving around the city for at least several days.

Why Testing in Mexico Could Be Important

Testing in Mexico is of particular interest because the country already produces several Kia and Hyundai models for global markets. Prototype work there could be part of assessing local road conditions. However, this also aligns with the assumption that Kia may be considering the possibility of the EV3 appearing in North America, specifically in Canada.

Plans for the American Market and Reality

Initially, Kia focused on the EV3 for overseas markets. However, during its debut in 2024, the company confirmed plans for a US launch, targeting the end of 2025 or early 2026 with a starting price around $30,000-$35,000. This, as can be seen, has not yet happened, and Kia representatives have commented little since then.

A lot has changed since then: the $7,500 federal tax credit has disappeared, the American electric vehicle market has significantly cooled, and tariffs complicate the entire picture daily. It is quite possible that the EV3 may never appear in the USA. The paradox is that the demand for affordable electric cars has never been stronger.

Model Specifications

The EV3 is built on the Kia E-GMP platform. In other markets, the model is offered with two battery options: a standard 58.3 kWh and a larger 81.4 kWh battery for extended range. Both variants are driven by a single front electric motor producing 201 hp. Depending on the battery, the WLTP range can reach up to 372 miles (599 km). Fast charging allows replenishing the charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes under ideal conditions.

Furthermore, in January, Kia introduced the hot EV3 GT version. It uses the larger battery and increases power to 282 hp, allowing acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a claimed 5.7 seconds.

The appearance of test prototypes in North America is always a strong argument for optimism regarding future sales. However, current economic and political circumstances create serious challenges for importing new electric models, especially those positioned as affordable. The success of the EV3 in European markets shows that the product itself is competitive. The question is whether Kia can find an effective business model for supplying it across the ocean, where competition from local manufacturers and new Chinese brands is only intensifying. The solution may lie in localizing production, but that is not a matter for the immediate future.
