Land Cruiser Was the Leader in Number of Thefts in Japan, So Toyota Installed an Emergency Cutoff Switch

Toyota Land Cruiser 250 Update for the Japanese Market

Two years after its debut in the domestic market, Toyota has updated the Land Cruiser 250 for Japan. The changes mainly involve the addition of new safety and anti-theft systems, although at first glance the updates may seem minor. It is important to note that currently only the gasoline version of the SUV has received improvements, while the diesel version is expected after December 2026.

Key innovations include:

Exterior and Interior

The exterior appearance of the SUV remains unchanged, retaining its characteristic boxy shape. However, the color palette has been updated: a new Neutral Black shade has appeared, replacing the previous Black (202), as well as a monochrome Sand without a white roof. These are in addition to the existing Platinum White Pearl Mica and Avant-Garde Bronze Metallic.

The round Bi-Beam LED headlights, previously offered only in the First Edition model, are now available as an option for the VX. They give the SUV a more retro look compared to the standard three-beam rectangular LEDs.

In the cabin, the VX grade now features eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function and four-way adjustment for the passenger seat. Particular attention was paid to anti-theft systems, which is an important step, considering that the Land Cruiser often tops the lists of the most stolen cars in Japan.

Technical Features and Safety

The smart key distance measurement system prevents unlocking and engine start if the key is far from the vehicle. The T-Connect My Start Lock function allows the owner to remotely lock the engine start.

Toyota has also added more sophisticated anti-theft features, which are important given that the Land Cruiser consistently tops the lists of the most stolen vehicles in Japan.

Under the hood remains the same naturally aspirated 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine producing 160 hp, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Price and Availability

The seven-seat Toyota Land Cruiser VX Gasoline 4WD is already available for order in Japan. Its price starts from 5,779,400 yen (approximately $36,200), which is 329,400 yen (about $2,100) higher than the previous model. As already mentioned, the more powerful turbo-diesel version will appear after December 2026.

This update shows how Toyota responds to market needs, especially in terms of safety and theft protection. The introduction of features such as remote engine locking could become a new standard for premium cars, especially in markets where vehicle theft is a serious problem. Preserving the classic design along with modern technology makes the Land Cruiser 250 an attractive choice for those who value a combination of reliability, safety, and style.
