Montgomery Implements Futuristic Speed Control Cameras

Montgomery County has begun using six massive mobile camera trailers to capture speeding violations. Their design is so futuristic that local residents are already comparing them to Tesla’s Cybertruck, and to some, they resemble props from Star Wars movies.

Technological Features and Protection

The devices, manufactured by the German company Vitronic, have the official name Poliscan Enforcement Trailer. They are equipped with special-class bulletproof glass because previous cameras have been repeatedly damaged by vandals. The manufacturer claims that the trailer design provides optimal protection against potential vandalism.

Montgomery County’s Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, Earl Stoddard, confirmed that such protection is necessary due to past incidents of equipment damage.

Scale of the Traffic Control System Expansion

County police confirmed that the six large trailers are part of a large-scale expansion of the automated traffic control system announced in the fall. In total, 140 new speed cameras are planned for installation, including 96 smaller portable devices and 38 stationary cameras in school zones. Additionally, 76 cameras for capturing red-light violations will be added.

Autonomy and Application

Unlike the old system, which required the presence of a van and a police officer nearby, the new trailers can operate completely autonomously. Police can monitor them remotely, move them between problem areas, and deploy them on so-called “high injury risk roads,” meaning where speeding has become a systemic problem.

Fine Amounts

The fine amounts remain unchanged, but they are substantial enough to deter many drivers. Speeding by 12-15 mph (19-24 km/h) is punishable by a $40 fine. If the speed is exceeded by 40 mph (64 km/h) or more, the fine increases to $425. In construction zones, the fine can reach $1000.

The implementation of such technological solutions indicates an intensification of the fight against speeding violations, especially in high-risk areas. The system’s autonomy allows for more efficient and flexible responses to problematic road sections, and its protected design is intended to ensure durability and stable operation even under conditions of potential damage attempts. This also demonstrates a trend towards applying high technology not only in vehicles but also in infrastructure to ensure road traffic safety.
