An Unexpected Sales Leader
The Q1 2026 sales results brought several surprises. One of the most unexpected outcomes was Rivian outpacing several established players in the US electric vehicle market. From January through March 2026, the company sold more electric cars in the United States than Kia, Ford, Toyota, and BMW.
Specific Figures and Rivian’s Plans
To be more specific, the California-based automaker delivered 10,365 electric vehicles to customers. During the same period, the company produced 10,236 vehicles, which is 129 fewer than were sold, likely using existing inventory to cover the difference. This comes ahead of the start of sales for the more affordable R2 model, deliveries of which are set to begin this spring. This model is positioned as a competitor to the Tesla Model Y.
Following these results, the company raised its annual delivery forecast to 67,000 units for 2026, which is 5,000 units higher than the previous estimate. Rivian’s full Q1 2026 financial results will be released on April 30.
Competitors’ Market Performance
Although Rivian remains a relatively small player compared to auto giants, it managed to outpace several of them in the electric vehicle sales race.

Kia America reported 2,023 sales of the EV6 model and 2,740 for the EV9, totaling 4,763 units for the first quarter. The brand also offers the electric version of the Niro in the US, but it likely accounts for only a small portion of the model’s total 7,455 sales. Thus, Kia falls significantly short of the 10,000-unit mark. The upcoming Kia EV3, expected by the end of 2026, may change the situation. It’s worth noting that Kia’s hybrid models set new sales records in the first quarter, showing a 73% increase compared to the same period last year.
Ford’s electric vehicle lineup showed an even sharper decline: US sales fell by 70% in the first quarter, to 6,860 units. The Mustang Mach-E accounted for 4,600 of these sales, while the F-150 Lightning and E-Transit added 2,060 and 200 units, respectively.

Toyota started the year strong, with the bZ model, including the Woodland edition, reaching 10,016 units in the first quarter, which is 79% more than a year earlier. However, since only 13 units of the new C-HR arrived in March, Toyota’s total sales of fully electric vehicles amounted to 10,029 units, slightly behind Rivian’s 10,365. As the company expands its electric lineup in the US, this gap could quickly disappear.
Summary for BMW and the Future
Finally, BMW recorded 9,856 sales in the US for the first quarter, including both fully electric models and plug-in hybrids. This represents a 50% drop compared to last year. This slowdown may be temporary, as the upcoming BMW iX3 Neue Klasse, expected by the end of 2026, is set to play a central role in the brand’s next phase of electrification.

Rivian’s success this quarter highlights the dynamism of the electric vehicle market, where new players can compete with traditional automakers even before their most important models are launched. The raised annual forecast indicates the company’s confidence in its production capacity and demand. However, pressure from competitors like Toyota, which is showing rapid growth, and anticipated new models from Kia and BMW mean the battle for leadership is only intensifying. The key for Rivian will be the timely launch of the R2 and maintaining current momentum in subsequent quarters to solidify its success.
