Kia Prepares a Response to the Tacoma with Powertrains Toyota Doesn’t Have

Kia Prepares a Mid-Size Pickup for the US Market

Kia has officially confirmed work on a mid-size pickup truck, which will receive two different electrified powertrain options: a hybrid and a so-called “range-extender” (an electric vehicle with an engine-generator to increase range). This step signifies the brand’s entry into one of the most competitive and conservative markets in the US, dominated by the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger.

The main goals stated for the creation of the new pickup were high towing capacity, true off-road capability, and a spacious interior. The vehicle is being developed on a ladder-frame platform, which it will share with the upcoming Hyundai pickup, whose concept predecessor is the recently shown Boulder SUV.

Ambitious Plans and Competitive Advantages

Details on technical specifications are still limited, but Kia’s management is confident that the new model will be able to compete not only with traditional rivals but also with more technological electric pickups, such as the Rivian R1T or Tesla Cybertruck, thanks to its unique powertrain offering for the segment.

Kia CEO Ho Sung Song says the pickup will offer buyers the choice of both hybrid and range-extender electric powertrains.

The company has set a very ambitious goal for itself – to sell about 90,000 units of this pickup annually in North America. This is a bold claim for a brand that has never sold commercial vehicles in the US.

Broad Electrification Strategy for Different Markets

The new pickup is part of Kia’s large-scale strategy aimed at increasing its presence in the US. The brand aims to achieve over one million annual sales in the American market by 2030. To this end, it plans to significantly expand its hybrid model lineup, specifically adding such options to key crossovers like the Telluride and Sportage.

Simultaneously, for the European market, Kia is preparing a completely different product – a small electric hatchback, the EV1, which is set to become a competitor to the Renault 5. This demonstrates the company’s differentiated approach aimed at simultaneously strengthening its position in different segments worldwide.

The success of the new pickup could become a turning point for Kia in the US, opening up an entirely new class of customers for the brand. Successful implementation of electrification plans for key models, coupled with the entry into the market of full-fledged body-on-frame off-roaders, could significantly change the perception of the brand, transforming it from a manufacturer of affordable family cars into a full-fledged player in all major segments. Much will depend on the final price, specifications, and, no less importantly, the reliability of the new model, as buyer trust in the pickup segment is built over years.
