Tesla Recalls All 173 Affordable Cybertrucks Due to Risk of Wheels Falling Off

Problem with Brake Discs

Owners of 173 Cybertruck RWD pickups have faced a new serious issue. Tesla has announced a recall of this budget version because the wheels could fall off while driving — one of the most dangerous malfunctions imaginable.

Cause and Scope of the Recall

Tesla reports that road irregularities and load during turns can cause cracks in the brake disc stud holes. If this happens, the entire wheel stud can detach from the hub. The company has not recorded any accidents or injuries due to this problem, although it received three related warranty claims.

In total, 173 models manufactured from March 21, 2024, to November 25, 2025, are included in the recall. The issue only affects rear-wheel drive Cybertruck versions with base 18-inch wheels, not those equipped with optional 20-inch wheels.

History of Defect Discovery

Tesla first identified a potential problem in August last year when cracks were noticed in brake discs during pre-production testing, although all studs remained intact at that time. Further investigation and field reports showed the issue was more serious than initially thought.

Not only did Cybertruck RWD units leave the factory with the defect, but some Tesla service centers also used potentially faulty brake discs. Therefore, vehicles that had undergone brake replacement may also have this problem.

How Will the Problem Be Resolved?

Tesla recalls all cheap Cybertrucks due to possible wheel detachment

Although the recall notice specifies vehicles manufactured from March 21, 2024, Tesla notes that production of the Cybertruck RWD with 18-inch wheels only began on August 28, 2025. Production ended less than three months later, on November 5, due to limited demand for this version.

Owners will receive notification from Tesla after June 20. They will be asked to bring their vehicles to a service center, where technicians will replace the front and rear brake discs, hubs, and nuts with updated, more durable components.

This recall highlights how important thorough quality control is, even for innovative vehicles like the Cybertruck. Although the number of affected vehicles is small, the problem itself — potential wheel detachment — is extremely dangerous. Tesla is responding proactively, offering replacement of key components to prevent any incidents in the future. It is worth noting that the budget version of the Cybertruck did not last long on the market due to low demand, making this recall even more telling in the model’s history.
