New Opel Corsa GSE beats Peugeot GTI using Peugeot’s powertrain

New Opel Corsa GSE: An electric hot-hatch that brings back the spirit of the 80s

Opel and its British twin, Vauxhall, have decided to revive the glorious traditions of hot hatches, but now with an electric powertrain. Today, the company introduced the new Corsa GSE, which the manufacturer claims is the fastest electric hot-hatch on the market, accelerating to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds.

Technical specifications and performance

Under the hood of the Corsa GSE is a single electric motor producing 276 hp (281 PS / 207 kW) and 345 Nm of torque, sending power to the front wheels via a limited-slip differential. However, full power is only available in Sport mode, while in normal mode, the driver gets 228 hp (231 PS / 170 kW).

Interestingly, the Corsa GSE uses the same platform, powertrain, and basic chassis as the Peugeot e-208 GTI, which also belongs to the Stellantis group. However, Opel turned out to be faster: 5.5 seconds to 100 km/h in Sport mode versus 5.7 seconds for the Peugeot. For comparison, the heavier Mokka GSE crossover (47 kg heavier) takes 5.9 seconds. The Corsa GSE also significantly outperforms competitors like the Alpine A290 (6.4 seconds) and the Mini Cooper JCW (5.9 seconds).

Chassis and suspension

Opel engineers installed a stiffer and lower suspension, as well as upgraded brakes with four-piston calipers. According to the manufacturer, steering and pedal response have significantly improved compared to the standard electric car. The car is fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires sized 215/40 R18, mounted on three-spoke alloy wheels reminiscent of the original Opel Corsa GSE from the 1980s — the rival of the Peugeot 205 GTI.

Interior and design

Inside the Corsa GSE, the driver is greeted by sports seats with a plaid insert, continuing the 80s hot-hatch theme. Other interior details include Alcantara upholstery, aluminum pedals, and bright yellow accents. The instrument panel now features a display showing performance data, including acceleration and load. Externally, the car gets a black roof, a rear spoiler, and more aggressive bumpers.

Range and competitors

Exact range data has not yet been announced, but the Corsa GSE uses the same 51 kWh battery (usable capacity) as other Corsa models and other Stellantis vehicles on the CMP platform. The range is expected to be approximately the same as the Peugeot e-208 GTI — around 349 km. This is sufficient for city driving but not for long journeys.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen is preparing the debut of the ID. Polo GTI, which, according to rumors, will have a range of over 418 km but only 223 hp (226 PS / 166 kW). So in the race to 100 km/h, it won’t be able to compete with the Corsa GSE.

Opel/Vauxhall

The new Opel Corsa GSE is a bold step into the future, combining nostalgia for the 80s with modern technology. It offers impressive dynamics for its class, but like most electric cars, it has limitations in range. The choice between it and the future ID. Polo GTI will depend on priorities: speed or practicality. The Corsa GSE clearly bets on the former, and this could be its main advantage for enthusiasts looking for genuine driving thrills without compromising the environment.
