Japanese supplier transforms Toyota Corolla Cross into a beach concept
The Toyota Corolla Cross, while less popular than the RAV4 in many markets, remains a global bestseller. Japanese interior supplier Hayashi Telempu decided to turn this model into a true beach hub on wheels. The concept, named Weekend Coast, targets young families and pet owners who use their crossover as a base camp for leisure.
Who is Hayashi Telempu?
If you haven’t heard of this company before, here’s what to know: Hayashi Telempu is a leading automotive component supplier specializing in interior trim, floor mats, and sound insulation. Their products are used by nearly all major automakers, including Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru. The company’s global division also supplies products to American and European brands such as Ford, GM, and Stellantis.
Interior for active outdoor life
To create the Weekend Coast concept, the company leveraged its expertise to completely redesign the cabin. They added new materials and improved functionality for outdoor use. The main feature is a set of retractable seats and footrests in the cargo area. This solution is reminiscent of the Viewing Suite package from the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, which costs around $440,000.
The seats in the cargo area are combined with new blue and white interior trim with patterns inspired by sea spray. The concept also features special lighting on the door cards, a panoramic roof, and white upholstery on the dashboard.
Exterior and technical specifications
The lone photo of the exterior shows a two-tone paint scheme in light blue and white, echoing the interior theme. The concept is expected to have no mechanical updates compared to the Japanese version of the Corolla Cross. It is likely equipped with the standard self-charging hybrid powertrain.
Future plans
Hayashi Telempu plans to present the Weekend Coast concept at the Field Style Tokyo Show in Japan, which will take place on May 9-10. The company’s goal is to gather feedback from active lifestyle young families and pet owners. The data obtained will be used as a guide for future products. This means that similar aftermarket solutions could become available for purchase in the future.

This concept demonstrates how even a relatively inexpensive crossover can be transformed into a comfortable space for outdoor recreation, using unconventional solutions that were previously available only in premium cars. The idea of retractable seats in the trunk, while reminiscent of luxury counterparts, could become popular among a wide range of drivers who value practicality and the ability to set up a “camp” right from the cargo area. If Hayashi Telempu succeeds in bringing this concept to a production product, it could significantly change the perception of compact crossovers’ functionality for active leisure.
