The new Land Cruiser FJ has appeared in Japan at a quite reasonable price, especially compared to the American and European markets. However, Toyota immediately offers an extensive catalog of accessories that significantly increases the vehicle’s cost. It includes solutions from three sources: ARB for serious off-road equipment, Modellista for stylistic updates, and Toyota’s own accessories.
Accessories from Modellista
The tuning division Modellista, fortunately, has refrained from sporty parts that would look out of place on such a boxy vehicle. Their set includes a front bumper extension with integrated LEDs, a hood trim piece, an illuminated grille, subtle fender flares, side moldings, and a roof spoiler. Aluminum skid plates are installed under the front and rear bumpers for additional protection.
The SUV has received new 18-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels with a matte olive finish and a polished lip. Inside, Modellista’s contribution is mainly limited to LED accent lighting. Buyers can also choose protective door handle covers, a sunshade, tinted windows, and Pioneer speakers.
Off-road equipment from ARB
For those who prefer genuine off-road capability, the partnership with ARB offers a reinforced engine underbody protection plate, side steps that also serve as rock sliders, and a roof rack for additional gear. This equipment is the foundation for creating vehicles similar to the Land Cruiser FJ Meridian concept Toyota showcased in Thailand.
Toyota’s own accessories
Toyota’s own catalog combines style and practicality. The “Playful Set” includes topographic decals for the hood, doors, and spare wheel cover, as well as Molle panels on the rear doors and along the sides of the cargo area for securing gear.
Additionally, the manufacturer offers cargo trays, a rear door protective cover, floor mats, seat covers, sill plates, mudguards, sunshades, wind deflectors, and dashcams. Anti-theft measures are limited to traditional wheel locking nuts and a steering wheel lock device, which seems quite modest given the recent statistics of Land Cruiser thefts in Japan.
Cost of full equipment
All these parts are available in the official Land Cruiser FJ configurator in Japan. The full Modellista package, including exterior updates, wheels, and interior lighting, costs ¥965,800 ($6,100). The ARB equipment adds ¥591,800 ($3,800). Toyota’s “Playful Set” is the most affordable — ¥169,400 ($1,100).
The Land Cruiser FJ starts at ¥4,500,100 ($28,500) with a reasonable list of standard equipment. However, if you check all the options in the accessory catalog, the cost rises to ¥7,154,890 ($45,310), which already approaches the price of the Land Cruiser 300 Series. At this point, the buyer faces a dilemma that Toyota would probably prefer to avoid for its FJ customers.
Thus, while the base price of the new Land Cruiser FJ looks attractive, the pursuit of maximum customization can lead to unexpectedly high costs, effectively putting it on par with the older model in the lineup. This places the buyer before a choice: get a well-equipped compact SUV or, for almost the same money, purchase a significantly larger and more prestigious Land Cruiser 300, albeit with fewer personalized accessories. Such a pricing policy might make even the most avid enthusiasts stop and think.
