The rewritten title in English: Toyota Land Cruiser FJ for $28,500 costs as much as a RAV4 but is significantly larger in size

The smallest Land Cruiser hits the Japanese market

The smallest SUV in the Land Cruiser lineup has finally officially gone on sale in Japan. Toyota introduced the Land Cruiser FJ model in a single trim with one powertrain. The price starts at ¥4,500,100, which at the current exchange rate is approximately $28,500.

Price and positioning

This price places the new model on par with the cheapest RAV4 hybrid in Japan, specifically the Adventure version. Within the Land Cruiser family, the situation is even more interesting. The FJ turned out to be cheaper than the classic 70 Series by ¥299,900 ($1,900) and ¥1,279,300 ($8,100) more affordable than the larger 250 Series. Thus, it is the most accessible way to join the legendary nameplate, which usually costs significantly more.

Trim and design

The VX version is equipped with Bi-Beam LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels in matte black. Buyers are offered five body color options, including the Smoky Blue color shown in the official images.

The interior is exclusively finished in black using synthetic leather. Standard equipment includes a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch multimedia screen, heated seats and steering wheel, as well as the Toyota Safety Sense package. For those familiar with modern Toyota models of recent years, this set will not be a surprise.

Chassis and technical specifications

The vehicle is based on the IMV ladder-frame construction used in the Hilux pickup truck. The Japanese version has a length of 4,575 mm (180.1 inches) with a wheelbase of 2,580 mm (101.6 inches), making it more compact than the RAV4.

At launch, only one engine is available — a naturally aspirated 2.7-liter four-cylinder unit producing 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 246 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque. It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system with a rear differential lock.

Future plans and accessories

Although Toyota is not yet revealing all its cards, reports indicate that by 2029, the Land Cruiser FJ lineup could be expanded with a mild hybrid 2.8-liter turbo diesel.

For those looking to enhance off-road capabilities or appearance, a wide range of accessories is available from Toyota, ARB, and Modellista. Options include roof racks, side steps, protective cladding, special wheels, and various storage solutions.

Accompanying vehicle

Alongside the SUV, Toyota introduced the Land Hopper — a foldable three-wheeled electric mobility device positioned as a companion for the FJ. Its market launch is scheduled for spring 2027, with the price to be announced later.

Global distribution

The Japanese launch of the Land Cruiser FJ followed the model’s debut in Thailand, where it is also manufactured. The Thai version costs 1,269,000 baht ($39,200), which is $10,700 more expensive than the Japanese equivalent.

The new model will also go on sale in South Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and India. Europe and North America remain unavailable due to environmental regulations and import tariffs, respectively.

Interestingly, Toyota is deliberately avoiding electrification in the base version of the FJ, betting on the time-tested ladder-frame construction and a simple naturally aspirated engine. This approach allows for a lower price and increased operational reliability, which is especially important for developing markets. At the same time, the significant price difference between the Japanese and Thai versions indicates the complexity of logistics and local taxes affecting the final cost of the vehicle for consumers in different regions.
