Nissan’s rugged pickup gets an update for off-road travel

Off-road pickup presentation

Nissan and Overland Expo have unveiled a special version of the Frontier Ultimate Build2 pickup truck. This vehicle is designed for extended off-road travel, based on the Frontier Pro-4X model.

Equipment and features

The pickup was built in collaboration with AllDogs Offroad Coop. It features a reinforced front bumper with integrated tow points and a ComeUp winch with a capacity of 9,500 lbs (4,309 kg). The vehicle also received additional lighting, Nismo rock sliders, and Black Rhino Tembo wheels fitted with Nokian off-road tires.

Camper and autonomy

Installed in the bed is a Tune Outdoor M1L camper with a pop-up roof and sleeping space for two people. It weighs only 322 lbs (146 kg), and with the roof raised, there is full standing room inside (over six feet).

Other notable equipment includes Battle Born batteries, a Midland radio, and an ARB onboard air system. An external shower system with heated water is also provided so travelers can stay fresh during their adventures.

Suspension and chassis

The pickup is equipped with a specialized suspension from AllDogs Offroad, which includes new leaf springs and coil springs, upper control arms with increased clearance, reinforced lift shackles, and stainless steel steering tie rod extenders. These are paired with Fox Performance Elite shocks and rear shocks, as well as extended stainless steel brake lines.

Powertrain

The vehicle is powered by the familiar 3.8-liter V6 engine producing 310 hp (231 kW / 314 PS) and 281 lb-ft (381 Nm) of torque. It is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system.

Future plans

The Nissan Frontier Ultimate Build2 will debut at the Overland Expo West show tomorrow, and will subsequently be featured at a number of other events. After the tour concludes, the pickup will be auctioned on Bring a Trailer this fall, with proceeds going to the Overland Expo Foundation.

This project demonstrates how modern pickups can be adapted for extended autonomous travel, combining factory off-road capabilities with custom modifications. Using a lightweight camper instead of a heavy trailer helps maintain maneuverability, while the availability of a shower and autonomous power makes such expeditions more comfortable. The charity auction also underscores the social responsibility of the manufacturer and event organizers.
