One buyer purchased cyber trucks for $131 million — and it’s Elon Musk’s company

SpaceX Massively Purchases Cybertruck: $131 Million on Electric Pickups

SpaceX, which is preparing to go public, has revealed in its prospectus figures that Tesla observers had long suspected. Since 2023, Tesla has received approximately $890 million in revenue from SpaceX and xAI — an artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk and merged with SpaceX in February.

Musk’s space company has proven to be a big fan of the fully electric Cybertruck, despite a sharp decline in its popularity among private buyers. Last year, SpaceX purchased Cybertrucks from Tesla worth $131 million.

The Math of $131 Million

At current Cybertruck prices — $69,990, $79,990, and $99,990 — this amount corresponds to approximately 1,310–1,872 vehicles depending on the trim. A realistic distribution, taking into account base and mid-range versions typically chosen by corporate clients, yields about 1,700–1,800 units. The exact number depends on which trims SpaceX purchased and when, as prices have changed over the past 12 months.

These vehicles were purchased at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, and according to regulatory documents, the payment terms did not differ from ordinary transactions. While everything appears legal, the question arises: did SpaceX help support Cybertruck sales, and consequently, the growth of Tesla’s stock?

Declining Sales

Recent registration data showed that SpaceX purchased 1,279 Cybertrucks in the fourth quarter of 2025. This accounted for over 18% of all pickups registered during that period. Another 60 vehicles were purchased by xAI, The Boring Company, and Neuralink. Musk’s companies also bought 158 Cybertrucks in January of this year and 67 in February.

Overall interest in the Cybertruck has significantly declined over the two and a half years since deliveries began. In 2024, Tesla sold 38,965 Cybertrucks in the U.S., making it the country’s best-selling electric pickup. However, in 2025, sales fell to 20,237 units, and in the first quarter of this year, to 3,519.

Not Just the Cybertruck

SpaceX and xAI did not limit themselves to just the Cybertruck. In 2024, they purchased Megapack battery systems from Tesla worth $191 million. Last year, that figure grew to $506 million, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Cybertruck against a nature background

Interestingly, such massive internal support from Musk’s companies comes amid a sharp decline in demand for the Cybertruck among ordinary buyers. Although the transactions are structured as ordinary commercial deals, they effectively create artificial demand that helps Tesla maintain production capacity and reported figures. At the same time, this raises questions about the model’s real market appeal, since without purchases by affiliated entities, the sales decline could have been even more dramatic. The situation also demonstrates how close ties between Musk’s companies allow for resource redistribution and mutual support during difficult periods.
