BMW allowed 67 buyers to test their armored cars, one ignored explosives

VIP guests tested BMW armored vehicles

Recently, VIP guests had the opportunity to test BMW armored vehicles. The company sells protected versions of the X5 SUV and the 7-Series sedan. Drivers were able to compare the armored models with standard BMWs.

When asked who makes the best armored cars in the world, most people point to third-party specialists. However, for over 40 years, BMW has been proving that this answer is incomplete by creating its own protected vehicles. This is a very narrow niche, and the German brand spares no expense to ensure its armored vehicles fulfill their tasks when it truly matters.

Exclusive event for potential buyers

Currently, BMW offers reinforced versions of the 7-Series and X5 models. Last month, the company invited 67 clients from eight European countries to test these vehicles. While we are a bit disappointed not to have received an invitation, the participants were exclusively from the private sector and genuinely planned to purchase an armored BMW or a whole fleet of such cars.

It seems the automaker particularly wanted to demonstrate to participants how well its armored 7-Series and X5 perform, despite being significantly heavier than standard models. To test this, they were evaluated alongside regular 740d and 750e models, as well as the X5 50e, X5 40d, and X5 M.

Testing at the proving ground and technical specifications

Participants were also offered a chance to see how the models handle emergency braking in a turn, while special off-road sections were used to test the X5’s capabilities. The event took place at the BMW development center in Sokolov, with certified instructors from Germany and the Czech Republic.

BMW introduced its current 7-Series and X5 Protection models back in 2023. The X5 has a VR6 ballistic protection level, while the 7-Series achieves a higher VR9 level, allowing it to withstand prolonged attacks from firearms and explosives. It is equipped with a mild hybrid 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 523 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque, though it is also available in an i7 version based on the M70 xDrive model.

This event underscores that BMW does not merely adapt standard cars but creates full-fledged armored versions that retain dynamics and comfort despite the extra weight. For private clients seeking safety without compromising on handling, such tests become a decisive argument. Investing in similar events demonstrates that demand for premium protection is growing, and BMW is ready to compete not only with third-party manufacturers but also with its own standard models, proving that armor does not make a car less exciting to drive.
