History and Origin
Currently listed on Bring a Trailer, this 1979 Cherokee Chief was built by Texas-based company Vigilante, known for transforming classic Jeeps into modern machines without losing their original character. At first glance, it looks like an especially clean restoration. The two-tone white and blue paint, side graphics in a 1975 style, and massive BFGoodrich tires perfectly suit the personality of the late-1970s Cherokee.

Under the hood sits a naturally aspirated 9.0-liter Viper Gen V V10 engine, built by Prefix, which produces 825 horsepower (615 kW) and 750 lb-ft (1,017 Nm) of torque. That is enough to put this vintage Jeep on par with modern supercars. Power is sent through a six-speed Tremec TR-6060 manual transmission, an Atlas II transfer case, and heavy Dana axles front and rear.
Interior and Comfort
Inside, the build took a somewhat different path. Instead of chasing SUV luxury, Vigilante turned to the heritage of Jeep and AMC, using blue Levi’s denim upholstery. Modern conveniences, including air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, power windows, premium audio equipment, and significant sound deadening, are combined with vintage-inspired materials.

Issues and Solutions
Interestingly, the build was not without problems. According to the owner, shortly after the completed vehicle arrived at Prefix’s facility in Detroit, an oil line reportedly came loose, causing the engine to seize. The engine was disassembled, inspected, rebuilt with new bearings, and tested before being returned to service.
Auction and Value
At the time of writing, bids had already climbed to nearly six figures, with a few days left until the auction’s end. This is not surprising. Many restomods put a lot of power into a classic. But far fewer are capable of combining 825 horsepower, a manual transmission, genuine off-road equipment, and denim seats into a package that looks cohesive without screaming for everyone to look at it.
