Future Mercedes-AMG electric car looks ordinary but will impress with its power

Spy photos: Mercedes-AMG GLA Electric spotted in Europe

Spy photographers have already photographed the electric Mercedes GLA several times, but now they have been able to get a close look at the AMG version. This is a hot electric crossover that suspiciously resembles an enlarged hatchback.

Front design and lighting

The front of the car is carefully camouflaged, but it will likely be styled after the CLA and GLB models. Details are hard to make out, but one can notice headlights with a star pattern and a wide lower air intake.

Side profile and chassis

The side profile is more telling: widened wheel arches hint at a wider track. The sporty version also stands out with lightweight alloy wheels, a powerful braking system with red front calipers, low-profile tires, and a sporty suspension that appears to have lower ground clearance.

Rear end and interior

It’s hard to tell that this is an AMG version, as the rear of the prototype looks completely ordinary. However, the production model may have a slightly sportier bumper.

Despite the restrained exterior, the interior will likely be borrowed from other models on the MMA platform. Nevertheless, there are several noticeable sporty accents, including a leather steering wheel with Alcantara and a flat bottom. The steering wheel also has two lower buttons with integrated displays.

Additionally, one can see silver trim and seats with enhanced lateral support and white contrast stitching. The screens are mostly covered, but one can expect the familiar 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment system. They should be complemented by an optional 14-inch display for the front passenger.

Technical specifications and powertrain

The GLA Electric is expected to be available in 250+ and 350 4MATIC versions. In the CLA model, the latter has an 85 kWh battery pack and an all-wheel drive system with two motors, delivering a total power of 349 hp (260 kW / 354 hp) and 515 Nm of torque. This allows the sedan to accelerate to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and have an EPA range of 502 km.

The AMG version will undoubtedly improve these figures. According to rumors, the crossover may get three axial electric motors with power over 500 hp (373 kW / 507 hp). They could be accompanied by a unique battery with higher energy density than the standard model.

The recently introduced AMG GT 4-Door has a similar layout: two axial motors at the rear and one at the front. However, that model has significantly higher power — 1,153 hp (860 kW / 1,169 hp).

Thus, the new electric crossover from Mercedes-AMG promises to become not only a stylish but also an extremely powerful representative of the compact electric vehicle segment. The use of technologies from older models, particularly the three-motor system, indicates the brand’s serious ambitions in the electric era. At the same time, retaining the practical GLA body and updated interior makes it an attractive choice for those seeking a combination of everyday convenience and genuine sporty dynamics. It remains to wait for official data on range and cost to assess how competitive this model will be in the market.
