Rendering of next-generation BMW X6 based on Neue Klasse X5

An independent digital artist has created a visualization of the next-generation BMW X6. This coupe-SUV is based on the recently unveiled X5. The rendering features a redesigned rear design inspired by the X2 model.

A new take on the coupe-SUV

BMW has just unveiled the fifth generation of the X5, providing a general idea of what the next X6 might look like. Independent digital artist Theottle quickly seized this opportunity, creating a pair of renderings showcasing the Neue Klasse vision for the coupe-SUV that started an entire segment.

While the X5 has existed since 1999, the X6 only appeared in 2008. The current version debuted in 2019 and received a facelift in early 2023, indicating that the end of its life cycle is approaching. BMW makes no official statements, but if the project is approved, the Neue Klasse X6 could hit the roads by 2027.

Same body, different roof

Of course, the model borrows the front-end design from its X5 sibling, albeit with a sportier look. In fact, both models traditionally share the body up to the B-pillars. Beyond that point, the X6 goes its own way, opting for the coupe-SUV shape with a sloping roofline that ends with a slightly longer rear overhang.

For the rear end, Theottle took inspiration from the sharp lines of the X2, an unusual choice given the criticism the X2 received for its rear design. However, the artist reworked the taillights, using more modern LED graphics to soften the reference. Even so, we assume the production car will feature more elongated rear light clusters, closer to what we see on the i3, iX3, and X5.

Interior and technical specifications

The interior and mechanical components will likely be borrowed from the X5. This means the coupe-SUV will most likely receive mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrains, as well as a twin-turbo V8 for the high-performance version. There is also a possibility of a hydrogen powertrain from Toyota in the future, although BMW might keep it exclusive to the X5.

Future of the lineup

The automaker has confirmed that the smaller BMW X4 will not return for the next generation due to changing market realities, with the X2 serving as its indirect replacement. The future of the X6 is harder to predict, as no camouflaged prototypes have been spotted testing yet. Until they appear, Theottle’s rendering remains the best preview of what Munich might have planned for its next high-riding coupe.

BMW X5

Interestingly, the design decision to use elements from the X2 for the rear of the X6 raises some doubts, as the X2 received considerable criticism precisely for that part of the body. However, adapting modern LED graphics could significantly change the perception. Given that BMW is gradually discontinuing some models in the coupe-SUV segment, such as the X4, the future of the X6 remains in question, although its popularity and historical significance for the brand could be decisive factors for production launch. The emergence of a hydrogen version also indicates BMW’s ambition to diversify its green technologies, although this remains speculation for now.
