Toyota trademarks Camry Apex — a designation previously used for a sporty version of the Corolla

Toyota, once associated with exclusively practical and boring cars, is now actively expanding its lineup of sporty versions. It seems the next step could be the creation of a more dynamic modification of the Camry sedan, which will bear a name already familiar to brand enthusiasts.

Trademark “Camry Apex” filed for registration

On June 30, Toyota filed an application to register the trademark “Camry Apex” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. This information was first noticed by CarBuzz. It is worth noting that a car with this name has never been produced before.

The legacy of the Corolla Apex: what does it mean?

Although the Camry Apex is a novelty, Toyota has already used the “Apex” brand for another model. In mid-2020, a special version, the Corolla Apex Edition, debuted on the American market, with production limited to 6,000 units.

This version was based on the Corolla SE and XSE trims. It did not receive an increase in engine power but had a significantly different chassis:

Additionally, 120 of these cars were equipped with a six-speed manual transmission with an auto rev-matching function. Although the Corolla Apex was not as extreme as the later GR Corolla, it was an important signal of the company’s changing direction.

What to expect from a potential Camry Apex?

Of course, registering a trademark by itself does not guarantee the appearance of a production model. However, given Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda’s commitment to creating exciting cars, the appearance of a Camry Apex on the market would not be a surprise.

If the new model follows the path of the Corolla Apex, we can expect:

  • Retuned and lowered suspension.
  • Updated body elements for improved aerodynamics.

As for the engine, significant changes are most likely not expected. Toyota will probably save major powertrain upgrades for a potential high-performance GR Camry version, should one ever appear.

Thus, the registration of the name “Camry Apex” is further evidence that Toyota is serious about expanding its lineup of “hot” cars. If the project gets the green light, it will be a logical continuation of the story started with the Corolla Apex, offering buyers a more engaging driving experience without radical changes to the technical underpinnings. This will allow the company to meet the demand for sporty sedans without diluting potential interest in even more powerful models of the GR series. The midsize sedan market is gradually shrinking, and the appearance of such a niche yet interesting version could be a way to attract a new audience looking not just for a practical car, but also for driving emotions.
