11,000 California drivers with licenses have 30 days to retake a successfully passed exam

California has ordered about 11,000 drivers to retake a written knowledge test of the rules of the road. The decision was made after discovering “irregularities” in the testing process. Drivers have been given 30 days, otherwise their licenses may be revoked.

What happened?

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) sent letters to drivers who took tests between July 2025 and April 2026. The notices state that the test results do not meet the “driver testing criteria required by state law.” Drivers are instructed to retake the exam to retain their driving privileges.

DMV reaction

DMV officials stated that this step is aimed at protecting the integrity of the licensing process.

“Ensuring the integrity of our testing process is critical. Knowledge tests play a vital role in confirming that drivers understand the rules of the road before being issued a driver license in California.”

One driver’s story

Sacramento resident David Specht said he was shocked by the notification. He insists he did not violate any rules during the exam. After contacting the DMV, he was only told that many other drivers had received similar letters, but no one explained the specific reason for the issue with his test.

“I know I didn’t cheat,” Specht said, adding that he believes many other affected drivers are likely in the same situation.

Lack of explanation

Without further details from the DMV, some recipients of the letters are speculating whether the problem is related to possible fraud, issues at a test center, or even a broader administrative or data processing error. The agency has not publicly disclosed the nature of the “irregularities” nor stated whether they were linked to specific test locations, software, or procedures.

The situation raises many questions. Drivers who already obtained their licenses are now forced to prove their competence again, without a clear understanding of what exactly went wrong. The lack of transparency from the DMV only increases distrust and confusion. Perhaps this is due to a technical glitch or a large-scale violation at one of the testing centers, but there is still no official answer. It also serves as a reminder of how important driver knowledge verification is, as even after obtaining a license, unexpected requirements can arise that affect the daily lives of thousands of people.
