Volvo plans to return sedans and station wagons to the US market

Volvo brings sedans and station wagons back to the US

Volvo has systematically reduced its lineup in the US over the past few years until only crossovers remained. Sedans disappeared, station wagons followed, and the company’s strategy seemed crystal clear: Americans want SUVs, so Volvo will sell precisely those. However, now the company appears to be reconsidering this approach, and the timing has turned out to be very opportune.

More: There is still hope for Volvo station wagons

According to Automotive News, Volvo is considering producing a pair of midsize electric cars for the US market, which could arrive in 2028, potentially bringing both a sedan and a station wagon back to American showrooms.

It is reported that the cars will be based on Volvo’s new SPA3 platform, the same next-generation architecture underpinning the future EX60. Since these vehicles are already being developed for Europe, adapting them for American roads would not require significant effort, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

Technical details and prospects

The EX60 is equipped with an 800-volt electrical system, enabling faster charging and supporting a wide range of battery capacities, motor configurations, and performance levels. If the plans are approved, the two models will apparently revive familiar names from the 60 or 70 series, and a Cross Country off-road version of the station wagon is also being considered.

Although it is quite rare to see an automaker adapt a European-specification vehicle for the US market, Volvo believes it is not too difficult in this case. Nevertheless, expectations appear cautious. Combined annual sales are projected to be approximately 10,000 units, with pricing likely starting somewhere in the $50,000 range.

Betting on nostalgia for station wagons

If the company moves forward with these changes, it is easy to see how the brand can market these vehicles. Sedans and, most notably, station wagons are a deeply rooted part of how Volvo reached its current position. As we have seen across the industry, brands seek to monetize nostalgia at every turn. At least this time, it seems enthusiasts will benefit.

Edmunds analyst Ivan Drury told Autonews that he believes Volvo could carve out a niche for a “counterculture cool” electric station wagon, offering buyers an alternative in a segment that has largely disappeared under the pressure of the SUV boom.

Market factors and competition

There is another factor working in Volvo’s favor. As Polestar effectively retreats from the US market after tariffs shattered its product plans, a sedan-shaped hole has suddenly appeared in Geely’s American portfolio. A stylish Volvo EV could help fill that gap, keeping customers within the broader corporate family. This move would also provide Volvo dealers with some much-needed novelty after the brand’s US market share fell to 5.8 percent last year, its lowest since 2019.

This move by Volvo is significant, as it demonstrates that even in times of total SUV dominance, manufacturers can listen to the voice of enthusiasts and seek new niches. The return of sedans and station wagons, especially in electric form, could be not only a nod to nostalgia but also a strategic move to attract buyers tired of the monotony of crossovers. Given the complicated situation with Polestar and the decline in market share, this step could be a way for Volvo not only to survive but also to once again become a recognizable brand with a unique offering in the American market.
