BMW iX3 M: The First High-Performance Electric SUV from M
BMW’s M division plans to start selling electric cars in 2027. Following the announcement of the i3 M sedan, spy photos have emerged showing the brand’s first high-performance electric SUV, likely named the iX3 M, during testing in northern Sweden.
The heavily camouflaged prototype is almost identical to the standard model on the outside. However, noticeable large wheels are paired with a high-performance braking system featuring perforated discs and blue calipers at the front.
Expected Exterior Changes and Interior
The production model is likely to receive more sporty bumpers, a slightly updated kidney grille, as well as a modified diffuser and numerous M badges.
Inside, an M sport steering wheel with red and blue contrast stitching and highlighted M buttons covered with protective film is visible. There are also sport seats with increased lateral support and covered M logos. The car is expected to receive an iDrive panoramic display and a 17.9-inch infotainment system.
Technical Features and Specifications
BMW M engineers are cautiously revealing details of the powertrain, but it is known that future electric models will receive four electric motors. The front axle will be able to fully disengage to provide rear-wheel-drive characteristics and improve efficiency. All models, including the i3 M sedan and iX3 M SUV, will feature simulated gear shifting and a newly developed “sound palette.”
The motors will provide precise control of power and torque to each individual wheel.
They will be powered by a battery with a capacity of over 100 kWh, specifically adapted for the needs of high-performance vehicles. The company also notes that future models will have a long range, high energy recuperation efficiency, 800-volt electrical architecture technology, and the new Heart of Joy driving dynamics system.
The main question is the expected power output. Exact figures are known only to BMW, but it is estimated to be between 700 hp and 800 hp.
The arrival of the iX3 M marks an important strategic step for BMW M into the world of electromobility, where performance is beginning to be defined not only by engine power but also by advanced electric technologies, power management systems, and battery solutions. The success of this model could significantly influence the perception of high-performance electric cars in the market and set new standards for competitors.
