Speed limit breaches in Ukraine are in fact already working in test mode without fines. And from May 1 (unless, of course, quarantine interferes), drivers will start receiving ‘letters of happiness’.
Fines for Speeding
In this regard, we remind you about the fines for speeding in residential areas and on highways. They remain unchanged for now, and attempts to increase them have already been made several times.
Fines for Speeding in Ukraine
- exceeding the limit by more than 20 km/h – 255 hryvnias;
- exceeding by 50 km/h or more – 510 hryvnias;
- speeding that led to a hazardous situation – 680 hryvnias (and possibly a driving license suspension).
How to Pay a Fine for a Traffic Violation
We remind you that the fine must be paid within 15 days.
To do this, you need to know the bank details of the Main Treasury Department (GUK) in your region. In principle, they are available in most banks (and in electronic banking like Privat 24 they are automatically updated), but they can also be found on the internet. In the receipt form, in addition to GUK details, you need to specify the Payer’s full name, date, series and number of the violation decree, the amount (with kopecks), and contact details. You can check for violations and unpaid fines on the Ministry of Internal Affairs website, in your electronic cabinet, and through the mobile application ‘Diia’.
How Photo Capture of Traffic Violations Will Work from May 1
Photographic recording in Ukraine will work as follows.
The camera records speeding violations and the car’s number. The information is then sent to the data processing center, where an authorized police officer reviews it and issues an administrative penalty decree. It is especially important to note that the fine will be issued to the car owner, and it is to them that the ‘letter of happiness’ will arrive. If another person was driving, the owner can only ask them to pay the fine. Several dozen photo capture cameras have already been installed in Ukraine, and their total number is gradually planned to reach one thousand.
Their locations are not secret, and the addresses of cameras in Kyiv, for example, are already available on the internet.
Permitted Speeds in Ukraine
As a reminder, the speed limits in Ukraine are:
- residential areas – 50 km/h (in some places up to 80 km/h is possible);
- pedestrian zones – 20 km/h;
- outside residential areas – 90 km/h;
- on roads with a median strip – 110 km/h;
- on highways – 130 km/h.
