This Unique Coupe is Radically Different from Modern Chrysler Models

Rare 1958 Chrysler California Ghia Concept Car to be Auctioned

In the post-war 1950s and 1960s, American automakers actively experimented with design. Chrysler was no exception, partnering with the Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Ghia to create a series of elegant concepts. These models were unique but rarely appear for sale.

The situation will change in August during Monterey Car Week, when Mecum Auctions will put the rare 1958 Chrysler California up for bidding. Its smooth lines are radically different from the brand’s modern models.

Chrysler and Ghia Collaboration

The partnership between the companies began in 1949 against a backdrop of declining sales and a need to update the conservative design. Joint projects significantly changed the public perception of the Chrysler brand.

“The 1958 California Ghia is one of the most interesting results of this collaboration”

Unique Design

The two-door, four-seat car impresses with its elongated body, which has aged remarkably well. The front end draws attention with an oval radiator grille with chrome trim and dual headlights. The absence of B-pillars facilitates access to the rear seats.

The interior is not inferior to the exterior: black carpets, white seats with black piping, a red and white headliner. The dashboard is minimalist with analog gauges and a thin two-spoke steering wheel.

A Chance for Collectors

Details about mileage and past owners are not disclosed. However, for mid-century auto enthusiasts, this lot will be a real find.

This specimen is a reminder of an era when automakers were not afraid to experiment, creating true works of art on wheels. Its sale could become one of the main events of the season for collectors of retro automobiles.
