Affordable Slate Electric Pickup Suddenly Significantly Increased in Price

Price Increase for the Slate Electric Pickup

Initially, Slate announced an affordable electric pickup that was supposed to cost less than $20,000 including government subsidies. However, the company’s official website now states that the cost of the Blank Slate model is expected to be “in the mid-twenty-thousands”.

The company added that “the price may change” and “does not include taxes, fees, and additional equipment.” This means a price increase of approximately $5,000, making the model less attractive compared to its competitors.

Reasons for the Changes

Slate has not officially commented on the changes, but they are likely related to new legislation that cuts government support for electric vehicles. Specifically, incentives for new and used electric cars will be discontinued as early as September 30, 2025, instead of December 31, 2032, as previously planned.

These changes could significantly impact the electric vehicle market – without government subsidies, prices will rise, and demand may decrease. This is particularly noticeable for budget models, where a difference of several thousand dollars is crucial for buyers.

The technical specifications of the Slate remain unchanged: a rear electric motor with 201 hp, two battery options of 52.7 and 84.3 kWh with ranges of 150 and 240 miles respectively. Acceleration to 60 mph takes about 8 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 90 mph.

Despite the technical advantages, the new prices may force potential buyers to consider alternative options. The electric vehicle market continues to change dynamically, and such price fluctuations are becoming part of this process, especially in the context of changing government policies regarding support for “green” technologies.
