Problems with Tesla Robotaxi
The first test rides of the Tesla Robotaxi in Austin, Texas, revealed certain problems. In particular, the car sometimes violated the speed limit or stopped unnecessarily, for example, near police cars at a crime scene. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has already reported that it contacted Tesla to gather additional information.
Among the first passengers were well-known brand supporters who received invitations to test the service before its official launch. One of them, Rob Maurer, recorded a moment when the Robotaxi attempted to turn at the wrong intersection but corrected the mistake after a few seconds.
Additional Incidents
Automotive journalist Edward Niedermeyer also recorded a case when a Tesla unexpectedly stopped next to police cars. A separate video recording showed that the electric car was traveling at a speed of 35 mph instead of the allowed 30.
An NHTSA representative stated: “We are aware of these incidents and are communicating with the manufacturer to obtain additional information. The agency will review possible safety violations and take necessary measures.”
Currently, regulators do not require pre-approval of the technologies used in systems such as Robotaxi. This means that companies can test their developments without additional obstacles, but the responsibility for safety also falls on them.
Elon Musk’s previous statements about a cautious service launch seem appropriate. Although most rides went smoothly, minor incidents indicate that the system still needs improvement. This is especially true for recognizing road situations and complying with rules. Drivers and pedestrians can expect more stable operation of autonomous vehicles in the future.
