Florida Received a Powerful Mustang GT for Patrol
The Florida Highway Patrol has added a new Mustang GT to its fleet. This powerful vehicle has joined other high-speed patrol cars, such as the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Corvette. At the same time, the FHP is participating in an online vote for America’s most beautiful police car.
Ford does not produce a special police version of the Mustang, so Florida had to modify the standard GT itself. Although the exact technical changes are not disclosed, the base engine with 480 horsepower is quite sufficient for pursuing violators. This is already the second time in FHP history that they have used a Mustang – the previous one was 30 years ago.
Public Relations Cars or an Effective Tool?
Although Florida is known for using unmarked civilian vehicles for patrol, the addition of the Mustang and Corvette may have a different purpose. The department has actively participated in the competition for the most beautiful police car, which indicates a marketing approach. At the same time, the very presence of such powerful machines on the roads can serve as an additional deterrent for offenders.
Studies have repeatedly shown the risks of high-speed pursuits, but in this case, it is hard to deny the psychological effect of the appearance of a sports car with police signals. Especially considering that many drivers in Florida are accustomed to standard patrol cars and may not expect such a serious chase vehicle.
